Tutorial
Tutorial Part 2/8

Hello dear player,

it's me again! I hope you remember me: Achilles Phers.

Yesterday I gave you your first introduction. If you haven't read it yet, you should do that now because what I'm going to tell you today is based on it.

If you did everything right yesterday, your realm should be in good shape today, even though you still don't have many resources or a lot of gold.

Your turn will not be much different from yesterday. Some values will have changed, maybe your confidence has increased or some of your gold was spent. All in all, nothing to be concerned about. After all, we are in the first years of your rule.

Let's look a bit more closely at the map today. As you surely know by now, your realm owns seven acres of land. It's important to take a look at the surroundings now. You already have a scout waiting for your orders in your capital. Go to the map and click on your village. There you will see the symbol for your scout. Click until the frame turns blue. Now press the right mouse button to open the figure menu.

At the top, you will see gray areas with commands you can give to the scout at the moment. One of them is 'move'. Left-click on it and the menu will be replaced by a red grid overlay which shows where the scout can go this quarter. Move him now if you haven't done so already. Your scout will get new movement point in the next quarter. As you will notice, different types of terrain will require different amounts of movement point to be travelled.

As soon as you move your scout, the visible area of the map will grow accordingly. You have started exploring a tiny part of Tamar!

You can also activate the borders on the map. Do this now. It will give you useful information about your neighbors. Click on each visible figure and acre to see who owns it. Depending on whether it is human neighbors or non-humans, the outcome will be different. Human neighbors will be unknown to you so far and only show as 'player xx'. In the next quarter however, when the reports of your scout have made it back to your village, they will be identified by the name. Take another look then!

Have you found non-humans like undead, dragons, orcs, elves or dwarves? Don't panic. It may look bad. Maybe you have inherited the land of another player who fought against one or more of these races. In that case that non-human races, especially orcs, undead and dragons can be quite aggressive. Praise the gods that this will not concern you right now. For now, you enjoy an almost divine protection!

This protection will last as long as you don't recruit armies and your total land doesn't exceed 10 acres. Until then, you are safe. Remember this.

If you are surrounded by non-humans, it will be important to find allies. At some point you might have to wage battles against them, and you should be sure that you can get supplies. Your scout will be your biggest asset for this. Send him around and try to find as many human neighbors as possible.

If you only have human neighbors, you can look into the future more calmly. The code of honor on Tamar dictates that no Lord may attack a new Lord unless they provoke him or deploy armies. This code has so far always been kept. The only exception is if you disappear and don't react to any message for several years, in which case you may be considered dead and your town be annexed.

Should the land around you be unoccupied, you will have an advantage as well as a disadvantage. Of course it will be easier to annex land and grow your realm faster. On the other hand, it will be harder to find someone to trade with, which will limit you to your own production of weapons and armor, which will be less advanced than what you could buy.

But don't think of being surrounded by other players as a disadvantage. There is something on Tamar that only you can produce and that old Lords need. You can use these products to buy land off other players, for example, and thus grow without waging war.

Tamarians value friendly behavior, so it may be a good idea to register an account on the forums and introduce yourself to the other Lords and Ladies.

The website www.tamar.net will be you first stop for this. Visit the community page and find the forum. Part of the roleplaying on Tamar takes place on the subforums marked as in-time. Just go to the tavern and send a greeting to everybody to let them know about your arrival.

A word about languages on Tamar. Just like the real world, Tamar is home to different languages. We use the Common Tongue (English), the Trade Tongue (German), the Language of the Nobles (French), and the Seafarers Tongue (Spanish and Portuguese).

If you speak the Common Tongue, use it. If not, use the language you speak best and hope to find somebody who speaks it equally well. The Trade Tongue is particularly well spread and should be your second choice if you know it.

That shall be all for today.

Remember what you learned in the last tutorial and don't forget to give grain to your people.

Have fun! I will be back tomorrow.

Achilles Phers
