Tutorial Part 3/8
Hello dear player,
By now you should be familiar with using the different screens. That's
why I want to focus on some special features that may be interesting
for you.
First thing you should do is build a market place, as mentioned
before. To be able to do that, we need to go to the research screen (by
way of the residence) and conduct some research in the area of
technology. As soon as you have reached level 1 in this area
(which will take about a year), you will find the market place in the
building screen of your town. Only when you have a market place it
makes sense to send workers on your acres to produce wood and stones.
You will then find wood and stones in the market place where you
can get them for free. Goods from other Lords will require gold that
you may not have yet. Since wood and stones are important for the
creation of other buildings, focusing on getting a market place is a
good idea. So start by researching technology, it will help you.
The research screen offers detailed descriptions on what results to
expect from a certain research job. Read them and then decide if you
really want to research this particular area. Researching also means
to spread the knowledge among your people. The more people you have
and the less confidence they have, the more expensive research will
be. The costs may also change during the research (due to changes in
the population). The costs given when starting are only an estimate
that may not hold true.
Conducting research at the wrong time has ruined a few Lords!
I also want to mention a special man. In the evenings, when the lights
go out and the people go to bed, the tavern time begins. At those
times, you might be visited by the bard. He will tell you stories of
Tamar. Read them well! They will be helpful and give you more hints.
The next choice to make is your "career path" on Tamar. You can be a
merchant, a warrior or a pirate. Of course you can create your very
own way of life, since Tamar is offering only the setting for your
role play. You could try opening a bank or live off of selling maps.
People have done this and succeeded. Or maybe you would like to earn
gold as a translator? There will always be Lords not speaking a
certain tongue while in need to send a message to someone. Lords can
thrive on their special talents.
If you should decide to become a manufacturer of goods, your way will
be quite different from being a warrior. That's why you need to
understand how manufacturing is done on Tamar.
Everything depends on the resources your acres will give you. You can
see them on the map by activating the raw material view. This will show
you to amount of resources for each acre. There are plants, animals and
mineral resources. The colored bars will show the amount per acre. Now
for some calculation: Every 2,500 people need 5 plant, 5 animal and 2
mineral resources. So if you have a lot of people compared to your
land, getting resources (except for wood and stone) will be very
difficult. Your people will be under-supplied and production will be
low. If you plan on producing goods, you should aim to keep your
population small in order to have a high production output.
Of course you can stay small in the beginning to earn money by
producing and trading goods and then turn around become a warrior
later.
As a warrior, you need to aim for a big population, because only 10% of
your people can be recruited into the army. And only big or well
equipped armies will prevail on the field of battle.
As a merchant, it is not as important to produce, but only to buy
cheap and sell expensive. The difference is your gain to live off and
to buy land and towns for.
As a pirate, it doesn't really matter how big your population is. Of
course you will need a port and access to the ocean first. If your
town is on the coast, try to find out if you have access to the ocean.
If so, try to increase your population, in order to build buildings of
level 2 and produce enough wood, gold and stone to be able to build
big ships.
This is your choice. Pick your path.
I remain for now with the best regards,
The sage
